CANTERBURY CREW WINS
A head wind far mast at the race and an ebbing tide faced competitors in the annual Pleasant Point bridge to Kerrs Reach long distance rowing race, which was won by the Canterbury number one crew yesterday afternoon.
Four crews from the Avon, Canterbury two, and Union Clubs entered the event; which was rowed on a sealed handicap system. The crews were started at 30 second intervals to prevent congestion over the first mile of the course but this margin proved Insufficient as the Canterbury No. 1 crew had to hold back its boat three times before being able to overtake the slower Union boat lust past the Seaview Road bridge. The fastest time was recorded by the Canterbury No. 1 crew, which also won the event on handicap. Handicap results were:— Canterbury No. 1, 27:49, 1; Canterbury No. 2, 28:13, 2; Avon, 28:24, 3; Union, 29:16, 4.
