Hydrographer To Navy

Commander I. S. Monro, formerly commanding officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s survey ship Lachlan, has been appointed hydrographer to the Navy. He replaces Commander W. J. L. Smith, who has taken up an appointment in the

Ministry of Defence in Wellington. The former assistant hydrographer in the Navy Office (Commander G. B. W. Johnson) replaces Commander Monro as commanding officer of the Lachlan.

Commander Monro, who was born in Christchurch, joined the Navy in 1945 and served in the Korean War on board H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti. He gained experience in hydrographic surveying on board H.M.S. Shackleton in Britain. In 1962 he was appointed Deputy-Director of Plans 'in the Navy Office, WellingI ton.
