New Map Of Marlborough Sounds Published
A new large-scale map of the Marlborough Sounds has been published by the Department of Lands and Survey. Printed in several colours, with relief shading showing the shape of the land, the map is a guide to all important features in the area, including reserves and wildlife
sanctuaries. It covers Blenheim, Renwick and Havelock, Whangamoa Head, Croiselles Harbour, D’Urville Island and Stephens Island. The Chetwode Islands, Cape Jackson, Cape Koamaru and the Brothers are shown. The scale is one inch to 1.58 miles. There is also a street map of Picton.
Names recently approved by the New] Zealand Geographic Boar® are included. For example, the point once known as Wellington Head, at the northern entrance to Tory Channel, is correctly
identified as Peranb Head. A comprehensive index lists streets, mountains, bays and similar places. A novel and useful feature is the marking of the coastline in blue where there is a public reserve of one chain above high-water mark and the marking in red of the coastline in private ownership. For fishermen the map shows the area within the Sounds where the blue cod restriction of 12 fish a person a day applies, and the boundaries in Double Cove where no line fishing is permitted. Notes in a panel on the map provide information on fishing restrictions in the Sounds. The notes also provide information on the Motor Launch Regulations applying to the Sounds, details of access along the coastline, and camping and shooting restrictions.
