Body Of Avalanche Victim Found
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 18. The body of one of four Auckland trampers lost in an avalanche in Rainbow Valley on December 24 was flown out of the area to Clyde today. It will be flown to Auckland for positive identification this week.
Attempts to find the remains of the other three men will probably be made tomorrow.
The body was discovered on Friday by a Dunedin man. Dr R. F. Entwhistle, and his wife who were returning through the valley after a fortnight tramping in the Aspiring area. Dr Entwhistle reported to the Wanaka police on Saturday and a party headed by Constable P. V. Keown, of Wanaka, flev to the valley in a helicopter piloted by Mr R. Mclvor.
Mr Mclvor was the pilot who led rescue attempts in almost nil visibility on the day after the avalanche. The body was found partly buried in silt about two miles from the avalanche. Constable Keown said it was almost devoid of clothing and that identification would be difficult. The avalanche, originally estimated to be half a mile long, a quarter of a mile wide and 80 feet deep, has begun to show signs of movement.
