First Innings Points To Wellington

(Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. A sporting declaration by the Auckland captain, J. T. Sparling, helped to turn a drab encounter into an afternoon of reasonably bright cricket on the final day of the AucklandWellington Plunket Shield match at Eden Park yesterday.

Rather than carry on the grim chase for Wellington’s first innings total of 378, Sparling declared the Auckland innings at the overnight score of 234 for six, 144 runs behind. Sparling’s decision enabled the Wellington batsmen to add a welcome freshness to the match, which on the first two days had meandered along qnd realised 612 runs in 15 hours. They made 105 in 95 minutes and when the skipper, B. A. Bolton, closed the innings, Auckland had the task of scoring 250 runs in 175 minutes for outright victory. Auckland started off at a great rate, 18 coming off the opening overs of the Wellington speedsters M. J. Coles and J. R. Moss, in better than even time.

However, the loss of three wickets for only eight runs immediately after tea pinned Auckland back. D. O. Neely and Sparling put on 79 in

77 minutes in an unbroken fifth wicket stand, but at the close, Auckland was well short of its target and Wellington took first innings points. WELLINGTON First innings 378 Second Innings P. J.
