Assertive Batting By Old Collegians

Old Collegians were in a strong position at the end of the first day against EastShirley, having compiled 346 in their first innings. By stumps they had dismissed three EastShirley batsmen for 90. The East-Shirley captain, A. L. Andrew, sent Old Collegians in to bat on a slow wicket which gave little help to East’* medium-pace attack. After the lo*s of their first wicket at 29 Old Collegian* consolidated their position with a second-wicket stand of 76 by M. G. Lester and D. S. Bank*. Both batsmen were in fine form, driving confidently through the off-side.

H. J. Taylor continued his pre-Chrlstmas form, being particularly strong off the back foot and also showing an aptitude for placing the ball through the on-tide. In th* tec* of the continual ■troke-making by —the Old Collegian* batsmen, G. V. D. Pulley was the steadiest East bowler. He plugged away gamely and his figure* were not a true indication of his value. W, McQueen had a successful second spell, but was astray too often in his direction.

Accurate bowling by N. F. Curtis and later by the spinners. B. A. Carpenter and M. G. Lester, contained Bast's acoring rate. G. Tait batted confidently against the medlumpace bowlera and J. W. Grocott nit the ball well until he was beaten by a yorker from Curtis.
