BATHERS IN TROUBLE
Three Children Brought to Three children were brought out of the water by surf-club patrolmen at Spencer Park and Sumner yesterday. Two boys, aged about 10, were pulled out of a channel at Spencer Park beach after being caught in a rip. The patrolman said they appeared to panic, but they would have been safe because they were drifting into shallower water. A small girl was rescued at Sumner when she crossed the channel on a float board but had difficulty returning. The Sumner and the North Beach patrolmen issued warnings to swimmers going outside channels at the beaches. On the seaward side of the channels swimmers were only about waist-deep, but as they returned to the shore they suddenly found themselves out of their depth. The Sumner patrolman said he could accept no responsibility for swimmers outside the channel.
Spencer Park reported that there were about 100 bathers in the morning and 150 in the afternoon, ,)>ut Waimairi had few swimmers. North Beach was more popular, with 200 to 300 swimmers. New Brighton had a peak total of 180 and about 400 swimmers throughout the day. Much seaweed was reported at South Brighton. There were about 100 bathers in the morning, but fewer later. Sumner had no surf, but a strong north-easterly meant that there were few swimmers. About 50 bathers were reported at Taylor’s Mistake. With no rip, swimming was safe.
