Gas To Be Used
The Parliamentary Fuel and Power Committee has authorised the North Canterbury Hospital Board to amend Ito proposal for a coal-fired boiler for Coronation Hospital to one for a gas-powered boiler. ' This was announced last evening by the Minister of Health (M r McKay) in a telegram to the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. M. McGuigan). Mr McGuigan aaid that the decision was a major gain for those in the Christchurch area concerned about the problem of air pollution. In his telegram. Mr McKay said that while the committee considered that the original proposal for a coal-fired boiler would be technically efficient and would not give rise to the expected nuisance, it had decided to authorise the Hospital Board to amend its proposal in view of local concern.
“This shows the results that can be achieved by the concerted efforts of those people totally interested,” said Mr McGuigan. Residents living in the area near the Coronation Hospital had suffered air pollution for a number of years from different sources, be said.
