Nagle’s Long Experience Tells
(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA. “Once he gets a little age on him, we’ll have to watch out,” K. D. G. Nagle, winner of the 1970 New Zealand Professional Golf Association championship, said at Mount Maunganui, when speaking his young main rival, J. Lister (Timaru), at the prizegiving on Saturday night. •‘l’m sorry,” said Nagle, referring to Lister finishing second again. Nagle this time won $2500 and Lister $1750. Nagle’s four rounds for a 268 total were a record for P.G.A. tournaments at Mount Maunganui, beating the 274 shared by T. Kendall (New
Zealand), M. Roesink (the Netherlands), and A. Jacklin (Britain). In the championship, sponsored by Forest Products and Stars Travel and worth $13,500 this year, Lister started the afternoon with a one-hole handicap on Nagle and on the easy first nine failed to make the imp: ession he needed. On the fifteenth he had an eagle which closed the gap that Nagle had built, and at the sixteenth Lister putted for a vital birdie but saw his effort from about seven feet just miss the hole. He finished 21 under the card for the 72 holes and his only hope of gaining the title was for Nagle to crash on the last three holes home. But as Lister waited at the clubhouse the canny Australian played every shot with caution and worked his way to the eighteenth. The first and second round
leader, D. Graham (Australia); Kwtth Nagle on Saturday, uld not keep up the pressure and finished third two shots ahead of the consistent and popular R. Vines (Australia) and W. Godfrey (New Zealand). S. G. Jones (Hastings) started three shots behind but recovered with- an eagle on the sixth. He continued to play consistent golf after this, and was given the amateur lead by a shot when E. McDougall (Tokoroa) crashed on the sixteenth. Results (» denotea amateur) Included:— 268—K. D. G.
