Jones Defeats Professionals

(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA. For the second time, S. G. Jones, the Hast* ings amateur and former New Zealand champion and representative golfer, has vanquished a professional Yesterday he won the Spalding Masters $5OOO tournament by a stroke from ah Australian professional, B. Cox on, who finished with 275 for the four rounds. Jones’s repetition of Ms 1964 Watties victory was perhaps the best conceived ending for a day of golfing drama, starting with the elimination of P. W. Thomson (Australia) from the running, when he was affected by the heat and dropped five strokes behind the lead after the morning round. Jones started his great run with a 33, two under par, and gained the lead with Coxon on the sixteenth when he sank a fairly long putt. They were even at the eighteenth, although only a fine bunker shot had aaved Jones on the seventeenth.

In a great finish, Jones hit a drive straight up the fair, way while Coxon went off to the right, ending behind a small tree which obscured his sighting of the green. He played over the top and landed on the edge of the green, while Jones calmly played a wedge which landed barely three feet from the pin, RECORD SET During the afternoon, a young Australian professional, D. Graham, set a course record when he had a 64, one shot better than A. Palmer (North Otago), who had a 65 on the revised Isyout on the first day. Leading scores (* denotes amateur). 274 -3. G.
