ATTORNEY IN U.S.
Nixon Wants Replacement (N.Z. Pres* Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 21. President Nixon has made moves to replace a United States attorney, Mr Herbert Morgenthau, Aqierica’s foremost prosecutor of underworld crime. A White House statement said that -Mr Nixon planned to remove Mr Morgenthau, a Democrat, and replace him with Mr Whitney North Seymour jun., a Republican. Mr Morgenthau said later that he had repeatedly stated, publicly and privately, that he would stay on the job until he was satisfied that his obligations were fulfilled. He said he would give consideration to an official request from the Justice Department that he resign, but “meanwhile my staff and I intend to pursue our work.” “I think that you downgrade this office if you consider it a piece of political patronage,” Mr Morgenthau said, adding that he is deeply involved in complex investigations involving narcotics, illegal use of foreign bank accounts, consumer frauds, victimisation of the poor, and white collar crime and organised racketeering.
