Nativity Theft
(New Zealand Press Association)
PALMERSTON NORTH, December 22. Someone has stolen the effigy of Christ from the public relations organisation's nativity scene, in the Square, Palmerston North. The Palmerston North Public Relations Officer, Mr J. C. A. Francis, said today: “I am disappointed that the spirit of Christmas is not present In everyone.” The life-size doll, worth about $lO. was in a cradle, as part of a scene showing Jesus in the manger. Other figures in the scene have also been tampered with.
Mr Francis said this was the first occurrence of vandalism involving the nativity scene during his three years in Palmerston North. The doll would he replaced with another. About five years ago the display was set on fire. Another first for Mr Francis this Christmas was the receipt of two obscene letters through the organisation’s “Father Christmas Letterbox,” which has been installed each year in the Square. The police are investigating the theft.
