Warning On Dangers To Farm Visitors
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 22. A farm safety officer warned today of the dangers for city children spending their holidays on farms.
Thousands are expected to take a farm holiday this summer. .If it is a .typical summer, six children will die in in farm accidents, and. many will be admitted to hospital. The farm safety organiser for the National Safety Association (Mr J. C. Warren) today gave the following advice on- accident prevention to both parents and farmers.
Visitors to the farm have not grown up' with its dangers. Farmers must explain the hazards carefully. City parents should impress on their children the importance of obeying the farmer’s rules. Sheep dips, wells, sumps and water tanks must be covered.
Children should be supervised near rivers, creeks, troughs, dams and drains. All farm machines are potentially dangerous, and the tractor is the main killer. Animals, mainly horses, send more children to hospital each year than any other single cause. Children should be warned about the diseases spread by animals.
They should be injected against tetanus.
