South Zone Leads On First Innings

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

BANGALORE (India).

A century by the captain, W. Lawry, failed to prevent the Australian cricketers trailing by 44 runs on the first innings on the second day of their three-day match against Indian South Zone.

The Australians were toppled for 195 after South Zone declared at 239 for nine. Then the Australian attack trimmed South Zone’s advantage when it reduced the Indian side to 13 for two in the second innings before the close. South Zone added 35 runs to its overnight 204 for seven before M. Jaisimha declared after the dismissal of E. Prasanna and B. Chandrasekhar. S. Venkataraghavan scored a confident 42 not out. A record crowd of 30,000 then saw Chandrasekhar grab four wickets—including Lawry’s—as the Australians were tumbled out. Only Lawry, I. Redpath (29) and D. Walters (15) reached double figures.
