Moore Invited To Sydney
The 1969 world speedway finalist, R. L. Moore, of Christchurch, has been invited to race in two more feature meetings at the Australian Liverpool track in Sydney, one next month and one in February. Among his rivals at Sydney will be three other world champions, O. Fundin (Sweden), B. Briggs (New Zealand), and I. Mauger (New Zealand). However, he will I not have to contend with <them all at the same meeting. » : Fundin, winner of the world crown a record five
times, and Mauger, world champion for the second successive year, will be among his opposition in the first meeting in January. Fundin plans to return to Europe after this and Mauger has racing commitments to fulfil in the United States. However, Mauger hopes to return to Australia with Briggs in February and Moore has been asked to stand by for this meeting as well. No dates have been set for either of the internationals. Good Machine i Moore, world champion in 1954 and 1959, said yesterday that he had made special arrangements to borrow a good i machine for the internationals i after his experiences when he
flew to Sydney for a one-night meeting last Friday. The machine Moore was given when he arrived was “very sick” and after two second places, the magnetto failed in the third event For his last two events, a handicap race and a match race, he borrowed a motor-cycle from the English test rider, R. Trigg, and won both impressively. His victims in the final scratch race ineluded a former New Zealand champion, H. Cole, of England, a world finalist this year. Other opponents were Trigg, B. Harkins (Glasgow), A. Landells (Glasgow), G. Kentwell and J. Langfield (Australia). The next night Moore was back at Templeton, and on, his
own machine immediately broke the flying four-lap track record. Discussing record: prospects yesterday, Moore confessed that he was still not comfortable on his machine. ‘(The one I am using at Templeton is a new one. 1 •left'my best one in England ready for next season,” he said. Moore did not rate very highly his chances of breaking the Templeton clutch start record, held by Fundin. “By the time the scratch races are held the track surfa<e is shot. There is not much chance of a really fast time'after the sidecars and three-quarter midget cars have bad a couple of races each,” he, said.
