DOG THROWN OVERBOARD

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, December 22. British newspapers today carried front-page stories about a woman who threw her pet dog off a cross Channel ferry because she could not afford the quarantine fees. Miss Rhona Tillock, a secretary, said she had smuggled the dog, a mongrel called Stuffles, on board the ferry in Belgium but was warned by ship’s officers that she faced a two-year gaol term if she tried to avoid Britain’s strict quarantine laws.

“It sounds a monstrous thing to do,” said Miss Tillock, “but I had no choice. I liked the dog but 1 couldn’t face going to gaol for him." The incident was reported to have happened about three weeks ago and is now under investigation by the R.S.P.C.A.
