Two Container Ships Worked
Lyttelton watersiders worked two container ships yesterday—the Marama and the Seaway Princess.
The Marama arrived from' Wellington on Saturday with containers and cars for discharge. Before she sailed for Wellington yesterday to load
another consignment of cars for Lyttelton she loaded a small quantity of non-con-tainer cargo for Wellington. Watersiders waived their ban on working container cargo when they discharged the Marama. No containers were loaded for the return trip, however. Watersiders both discharged and loaded containers aboard the Seaway Princess. The secretary of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr M. E. Foster) said that the Seaway Princess was an Auckland ship and did not
come under the container ban.
Mr Foster said that the ban applied only to ships carrying containers between Lyttelton and Wellington. The next container ship due at Lyttelton, is the Maheno, from Wellington. She has 43 containers and 13 vehicles, all of which were loaded at Sydney. She also has a quantity of bulk liquid c; ;o.
