Long Service Recognised
Four employees of Donaghys Industries, Ltd, with an aggregate of 167 years of continuous service with the company were presented with long service awards in recognition of more than 35 years continuous service at a function at the company’s Waikuku factory. Directors of the company travelled from Dunedin and Christchurch for the function and the chairman of directors (Mr H. Parata), made presentations of gold watches. The photograph shows Mr Parata congratulating, Mr A. I. Macdonald (right), who has 46 years service. The others, from left, are Mr H. E. Tomlinson, nearly 40 years service; Mr R. A. Bell, 43 years; and Mr !>. W. Forward, 39 years.
Mr Macdonald began work in 1923 with the Andrews Twine Company, where his father was manager. Donaghys bought the Andrews company in 1938 and after the retirement of Mr Ronald Macdonald in 1943, Mr A. I. Macdonald became manager. In 1953 the Andrews company was integrated as a branch of Donaghys, Mr Macdonald continuing as manager at the Waikuku factory. Mr Tomlinson started with the Andrews company in January 1930, working in the flax mill until it closed about 10 years ago. For some time he was stripper-keeper but he was mainly in charge of the field production. Since the closing of the flax mill, Mr Tomlinson has been a leading hand at the Waikuku factory, which now specialises in hay-baling twine. Mr Bell has had 43 years service. He has worked in most sections of the Waikuku factory, but he has been in the workshop since 1935. Mr Forward began work with Maddren Brothers, Ltd, in July 1930 as a clerk. When Donaghys bought that company in 1939, Mr Forward became its Christchurch sales representative, a position, which he still holds.
