Bid To Preserve Normal School

A bid to get the support of all likely organisations interested in using the old Normal School to work for its retention will be made by the Christchurch Civic Trust

“This is serious and urgent,” said Mr A. C. Brassington. The Ministry of Works could virtually do as

it pleased. The building was not going to-fail down unless it was pushed down. The chairman (Mr J. Oakley) outlined what had been done to get “a stay of execution” on the building. He said that it was exceedingly sound structurally and it would be a tragedy if it was bulldozed: down. “The public does not realise what a fabulous scheme it has in the School of Instrumental Music which finds the school ideal," said Mr C. C. Steel Members debated who would use the school building as well as the School of Music. Mr H. G. Royds said it was wrong that public money should be wasted by bulldozing down a building and constructing new ones. It was decided to set up a sub-committee to confer with other organisations interested in using the building, and to approach the Education Department for its reaction.
