Shipping Disputes

Sir,—lt was with utter disgust that I read of two cases in which a minority group have held a gun at the head of progress. How dan a country that is so dependent on shipping for its livelihood remain competitive on world markets when such a group has the power to dictate such ridiculous terms as were demanded for the loading Of iron sand at New Plymouth? Who can blame shippers for wanting to usetoe most modern .forms of cargo-handling available, especially . when they'reduce costs, harbour fees and mysterious disappearances of some consumer goods. It is time that the waterfront industry took a good look at itself and realised that in the long run it can do nothing but damage to its already tarnished image by pressing for such unrealistic demands.—Yours, etc., JOHN H. SWANSON. December 6, 1969.
