18 New Members Elected

On election-night figures, the House of Representatives will have 18 new members next year, compared with 12 after the previous election.

Brief biographical details of those who will be new members if the results remain unchanged are as follows:

MR B. G. BARCLAY (L.), CHRISTCHURCH CENTRAL A town-milk farmer for 18 years, Mr Barclay is married and is the son of a former Labour Minister of Agriculture, Mr J. G. Barclay, and a cousin of the present Labour member for New Plymouth (Mr R. M. Barclay). He is deputy-chairman of directors of Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd, and has been a member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.

Mr Barclay contested Fendalton for the Labour Party in 1963, 1966, and the 1967 by-election. MR J. G. CHEWINGS (N.), INVERCARGILL Mr Chewings is a 49-year-old sheepfarmer of Mossburn, married with three daughters. He was educated at the Waitaki Boys’ High School and joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1942 as a pilot, serving as an instructor until the end of the war. A member of the Southland Education Board and the Southland High Schools’ Board of Governors for 15 years, he is president of the South Island Secondary School Boards’ Association. MR R. O. DOUGLAS (L), MANUKAU

Mr Douglas, aged 31, is the eldest son of Mr N. V. Douglas, president of the Labour Party and member for Auckland Central. A company secretary and a former member of the Manukau City Council, he is married with two children. SQUADRON LEADER R. P. B. DRAYTON (L.), ST ALBANS Squadron Leader Drayton is Christchurch-born, aged 44, and married with two children. He is serving with the Ministry of Defence in Wellington as a com-puter-systems analyst, but will now retire from the Air Force .and buy a home in St Albans. AIR COMMODORE T. F. GILL. (N.), WAITEMATA Air Commodore Gill, aged 52, married with three daughters, is the commanding officer of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Operations Group and was a Battle of Britain pilot His postings since the war included the United States as head of the New Zealand Military Mission, and he is now responsible for air search and rescue throughout New Zealand. Born in Wellington. Air Commodore Gill was educated at St Patrick's College and is a graduate of the Royal Air Force Staff College and the Imperial Defence College.

MR E. ISBEY (L.j, GREY LYNN Born and educated in London, Mr Isbey is aged 52 and married with three children. He served with the Merchant Navy during World War H and is a former national president of the Waterside Workers* UnionMR T. M. McGUIGAN (L.), LYTTELTON Senior administrative officer at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Mr McGuigan is aged 48 and married with three children. He narrowly failed to win Lyttelton in 1954, and since that time has been organiser for the electorate for Labour. He secured the nomination when Mr Kirk moved to Sydenham. MR J. G. O’BRIEN (L.), ISLAND BAY A Wellington City councillor since 1965, Mr O’Brien has an import-export business and manufacturing interests. He Is aged 44 and married.

MR J. M. ROSE (N.), OTAGO CENTRAL At 29 years of age, Mr Rose will be the youngest member in the House. Educated at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, he is married and farms two properties at, Waitahuna. He is chairman of the district young farmers* dub and won the Y.F.C. radio leadership contest in 1965. Mr Rose served a threeyear term on the Presbyterian Bible class Dominion council, and has been parish secretary for the last 10 years. He is a member of the Waipori Pest Destruction Board. MR L. C. SCHULTZ (N.) HAURAKI Mr Schultz, aged 54, married with four children, is a farmer at Mangatarata, a member of the Hauraki Plains County Council, and a director of the Te Aroha

Thames Valley Dairy Com? pany and the Dairydom Finance Company. During Worid War II he served with the Army and then with the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve.

Born at Hawera, Mr Schultz was educated at the Hauraki Plains College and . was chairman of the Mangatarata School Committee for . 12 years. As the National ; Party electorate chairman for Hauraki, he helped to organise three successful elections for the former member, Mr A. E. Kinsella. PROFESSOR K. SINCLAIR (L.), EDEN Professor of history at Auckland University, specialising in Commonwealth and East-Asian affairs, Professor Sinclair is aged 47 and married with four sons. He has a doctorate of philosophy

and has won a number Of prizes for scholarship. MR L. F. SLOANE (N.), HOBSON Strictly speaking, Mr Sloane is not a new member of the House, for he repre- ' sented Hobson from 1960 until his defeat by Mr V. F. ■ Cracknell in 1966. Aged 51 . and married with two childI ren, he has been a land ; agent in Dargaville since Mr Sloane had four years i overseas war service, reaching the rank of sergeant, and afterwards settled on a reha- ’ bilitation farm in Northland, ' where he remained until 11960. He is a past-president 1 of the Northern Wairoa Re- ’ turned Services’ Association - and a member of the R.S.A. Dominion council. While in the Army he represented the . North Island Combined Services at Rugby. MR H. C. TEMPLETON (N.), AWARUA A Rhodes scholar at Oxford University in 1952, Mr is 40 and married

with two children. He is assistant secretary (policy) for the Ministry of Defence and has been secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for External Affairs.

MR W. G. TOLHURST (N.), WANGANUI A chartered accountant and a member of the Wanganui City Council since 1965, Mr Tolhurst is married with four children. He has a bachelor of commerce degree from Otago University and served as National Party electorate secretary for Wanganui for 13 years. He is vice-president of the Wanganui badminton and lawn tennis associations and has represented this district at both sports. DR G. A. WALL (L), PORHtUA A medical practitioner. Dr Wall is 49 and married*’with five children. He is a- fellow of the Royal College of'Surgeons, Edinburgh, and -a for-

mer member- of the Blenheim Borough Council and the Marlborough Hospital Board, In the last election he stood, for Marlborough against the present member, Mr T. P, Shand.

MR K. T. WETERE (L), WESTERN MAORI Mr Wetere, aged 35 and married with five children, is a sheepfarmer and farm supervisor for the management committee of the. Mangaroa Maori Land Incorporation.

MR P. L WILKINSON (N.), RODNEY A legal officer with the Ministry of Works, Mr Wilkinson is 35 and was married this year. He has a bachelor of arts degree from Durham University, England, and expects to complete a law degree from Auckland University this year. He has gained honours in public speaking, swimming and rowing, and is a former Dominion councillor of the National Party. He stood for Waitakere at the previous election. MR J. H. WILLIAMS (L), WAIRARAPA Mr Williams won his place in the House from the sitting National member (Mr H. V. Donald), in the upset of the election. It was' the third time he bad contested the seat. Aged 49 and married, Mr Williams is a farm-equipment salesman and is an executive member of the Masterton Secondary Schools' Board ofGovernors.
