MANAPOURI LEVEL
Assurance By P.M. (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 25. The Southland Save Manapouri Comimttee today received advice from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) which indicated that the National Party was not irrevocably committed to raising the level of Lake Manapouri as had been feared by some committee members. Mr Holyoake’s reply to an inquiry from the committee read: “The Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) informs me that the investigation by the Ministry of Works of the foundation at the Mararoa Dam is required irrespective of decisions to raise the lake. “If the high dam is not built it will still be necessary at some time to build a permanent structure for satisfactory long-term control of the lake at its natural level. “This control structure will eventually replace the submerged rock weir at present being built near the dam site,” said the Prime Minister.
