FOUR-NAVY EXERCISE

N.Z. Orions On Call (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 11.. Five R.N.Z.A.F. Maritime Wing Orions are working from both sides of the Tasman for the first time during the four-nation maritime manoeuvres off the southern coast of New South Wales. The exercise includes 24 ships from, the Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand Navies. The Whenuapai-based aircraft are acting on orders; flashed across the Tasman by the Australian Operations Command. Some are flying into the exercise area, spending six hours on anti-submarine patrols, and then returning home. Others are being diverted to Edinburgh field, near Adelaide, for an overnight stay and are working from there the following day. Three submarines the Australian Oxlee and Otway, and the Royal Navy’s Singa-pore-based Rorqual, are in the exercise. The frigates Taranaki and Blackpool are the New Zealand contribution.
