Engineer (Highways)—Position No. 3536 DUTIES: Under the direction of a Senior Engineer to work in teams engaged on investigation and design of highway projects from preliminary drawings tp tender and construction stages and on the supervision of construction. Deputy Testing Engineer—Position No. 3679 DUTIES: Under the direction of the Testing Engineer to assist in the direction of a large laboratory and a team of testing and inspection personnel engaged on the inspection and testing of concrete, concrete pipes and products, including prestressed concrete, vitrified clay pipes and allied products. The work also includes a sophisticated concrete quality control programme together with investigation and developmental work. The laboratory functions in direct contact with the Board’s Construction and Highway Divisions and with the Board’s supply contractors in the fields of premixed concrete, precast concrete pipes, stoneware pipes, precast concrete articles and allied products included therein being a large number of concrete mixes and additives for special purposes. EXPERIENCE: Applicants should have demonstrated proven ability over several years to carry out the above duties. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must hold a Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering of an approved University or Technical Institution or equivalent qualification and have had at least three years’ experience in an appropriate field of Mechanical Engineering. Melbourne’s population will probably reach 5 million by the year 2000 and in this 31-year period the city will have to provide facilities and essential services to accommodate more than twice the population for which it now caters. The area under the Board’s control has been enlarged in stages. The Board is responsible for water supply, sewerage, main drainage and river improvements over an area of 460 square miles. To this must be added a further 224 square miles in which the Board is responsible for water supply only. Its town planning commitment extends over 1942 square miles. The Board is currently undertaking developmental projects involving the expenditure on capital works in excess of SA7O million. To plan and execute these projects, the Board requires— ENGINEERS The positions the Board has available are permanent staff appointments. They are challenging and offer immediate intellectual satisfaction and long term promotion possibilities. The Board needs Engineers of all disciplines, principally Civil. DESIGN ENGINEERS: To undertake investigation and designs associated with water supply, sewerage, drainage, and highway projects of the metropolis of Melbourne. CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERS: To supervise the construction of a variety of projects and other works and be responsible for their completion within the limits of time, cost and financial resources. FRINGE BENEFITS: Reasonable removal expenses for family and personal effects will be met by the Board, and provision can be made for temporary accommodation in Melbourne, if required. Good superannuation is available together with long service leave. SALARY: $A3757-$A7473 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. (A University graduate without professional experience will receive 5A4091 per annum.) 5A5678 is the minimum salary payble by the Board to a Corporate Member of The Institution of Engineers, Australia, or equivalent. In most instances the status of Registered Engineer (N.Z.) or Corporate Membership of The English Engineering Institutions is equivalent to Corporate Engineer (Australia). Salaries quoted are still under review and further increases are expected in the near future. The Board’s Executive Engineer, Mr E. J. S. Batten, will shortly leave for New Zealand and will be available to discuss professional vacancies in the Board’s establishment.
