The Maori middle-weight boxer, Kahu Mahanga, scored a sensational ninth-round knock-out over Tony Mundine (Australia) in Melbourne. Mahanga, outboxed early in the fight, floored Mundine with a right to the jaw in the seventh round, Mundine was on his feet at the count of two.
Mundine won the eighth round narrowly, but early in the ninth round Mahanga threw a full-shouldered right to the jaw that dropped the Australian on his back.
Mundine leapt to his feet only a second after the referee had counted him out. The Australian was game, but he had been badly hurt by Mahanga’s big right. It was one of the best fights to be seen in Melbourne this year. / Mundine, aged 19, tbfee years younger than Mahanga, is rated Australia’s best middle-weight prospect. / An Aboriginal, he is trained in Sydney by Mr Ern McQuillan.
