Parking At Lyttelton “Almost Impossible”

' Parking at Lyttelton had become almost impossible in some areas since the Lyttelton Harbour Board imposed restrictions on parking on the waterfront, the Lyttelton Borough Council was told last night.

Cr G. C. Adams asked that the matter of parking in Lyttelton be referred to the traffic committee for discussions with the Harbour Board and the Port Employers’ Association. “I appreciate that many of these people who are now parking in Norwich Quay and London Street are bringing business and money to the port, but they are coming here to work and their employers should assist in this,” he said. “It is virtually impossible to find a parking space in Norwich Quay during daylight and London Street is also nearly always full.” Cr J. Baines agreed that it was now hard to find parking and said that the situation had deteriorated since the Harbour Board prohibited a lot of parking. Beach Steps The council considered a report from its works overseer and 'a report from the Lyttelton Harbour Board outlining the condition of the beach steps at Corsair Bay and giving an estimate of $lOOO as the cost of repairing the steps, diving platform and

launch jetty. “The steps are In a very dangerous condition,” said Cr E. A. Camfield, “but I am not sure the responsibility for the work lies with us. We pay rental in respect of this jetty but it is not the Harbour Board’s responsibility to maintain jetties?” Cr J. Hemsley said that the board maintained all other jetties round the harbour.

It was .decided to refer the matter to the estates committee to- discuss the question of responsibility for repairs with the boyrd.

Grants.—The council declined to contribute to the cost of restoring the Canterbury Provincial Council

building but approved three others. It decided to give $l5O to the Lyttelton St John Ambulance Association and $4O each to the Nurse Maude District Association and the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club. Building Permits.—Fortyfour building permits of a total value of $102,892 were issued by the council in the last month. Most of the permits were for the construction of new dwellings or for alterations to houses.
