FUTURE OF POOLS
Meeting To Be Held A meeting of all parties interested in the future of the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs has been called by the Canterbury Progress League for the evening of November 24. Efforts have been made over many years to have new pools for the public and recently it was reported that the Government, had refused to subsidise a $1004)90 scheme to build new pools. The Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr A. McKenzie) said yesterday that those invited to attend included the Hanmer Residents’ and Businessmen’s Associations, the Arnuri County Council, the North Canterbury Hospital Board, the A.A. (Canterbury), the South Island Publicity Association, the South Island Local Bodies* Association, the Health Department, the Lands and Survey Department, the Canterbury progress League and Mr T. P. Shand, the member'of Parliament forth* district. The agenda would include a brief history of the pools—in the grounds of the Queen Mary Hospital—the future ownership, title to the thermal waters, tite future of the pools, private finance for future development, possible subsidy and many other relevant items. “It is felt that the present position should be made clear, and that any development - must be financially sound and have the solid backing of all , those concerned,” Mr McKenzie said.
