Town Hall Plan
Sir, —At last, after 50 years ' of procrastination our town ; hall is on the way. Having waited so long, we want the very best we can get. And the winning design promised ■ just that—the finest civic building in New Zealand. Suddenly the Mayor, to save ■ $500,000, wishes to alter the the original plan. Before this proposal is implemented we should have public assurances that it constitutes a real improvement in planning and aesthetics and in the provision for future expansion. , These assurances must come • from those best qualified to i express an opinion: (1) the person who drew up the brief ; for the architectural competition; (2) the judges of the I competition; (3) the winner ■of the competition. Unless I we get these assurances, and > publicly, let us not in the name of expediency and short-
term economy tamper with the original plans to the detriment of the whole concept.—Yours, etc., REGISTERED ARCHITECT. October 23, 1969.
