27% ABOVE AWARD
Works Agree To Margin The New Zealand Engineers’ Union has negotiated a rate 27 per cent above the award for members employed by freezing works, according to the secretary of the Canterbury Engineers’ Union (Mr L. Fortune). This brings the minimum pay for a fitter and turner with a trade certificate to $1,33.3c an hour. Mr Forttine said that under the previous Industrial agreement with the Freezing Works Union of Employers, the engineers were paid 20c an hour above the award.
The new rate, he said, was a recognition of the “ruling rate” that was needed to keep skilled men in their trade, and to attract others back from unskilled work in industry. “The people we have decent agreements with don’t have any trouble getting enough tradesmen,” Mr Fortune said. “At present there are many motor mechanics and fitters and turners employed on unskilled work in factories.” The Canterbury union, he said, would shortly approach Christchurch metal trades employers seeking the same 27 per cent margin obtained from the freezing works.
