Guarantees For Mortgages

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, October 22. The Government was concerned about the number of house mortgages which had to be supplemented by second or third mortgages at higher rates of interest, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) in Palmerston North today. It was proposed to expand the use of mortgage guarantee insurance in New Zealand, as had been done in Australia, he said. The State Advances Corporation had the ability to guarantee mortgages, but this facility had been used sparingly. It was intended to encourage private participation as well as that of the State Insurance office in this field.
