WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. Although tiie number of babies born in New Zealand last year was not up to the peak of the early 19605, the Plunket Society had more babies under its supervision than ever before the society’s Dominion council was told this week. The council, winch meets in Wellington twice a year, was told that the number of babies and pre-school children under Plunket supervision as at December, 1968, was 113,865. Of the 62,284 children bom in New Zealand in 1968, 50,890 of them became “Plunket babies,” Among the recommendations made by the council were:— Fireworks should be used by children only under the supervision of older people because of the large number of accidents to young people. Appropriate toilet facilities should be provided both for public and. private conveniences. The greatest source of infective hepatitis was the handles on the doors of toilets and the only way of insurance against it was by thorough hand washing. New Housing The council meeting, which was not open to the press, also passed a motion of support for criticism by the professor of sociology at Victoria University (Dr X H. Robb) on new housing areas, especially Porirua. The Plunket Society had 'made similar criticism in : 1963, as it had been shown I from overseas experience that in building a new community much more was needed than the provision of work and shelter for the people, it was stated in a supplied report
