FIRMER TONE IN ACTIVE SHARE TRADING

The high volume of trading was maintained on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday, while the market tone became stronger, with rises shading falls, and leaders slightly firmer. Only the overseas list was a little easier.

I Newspapers and Fletcher all! (firmed, but Dominion BrewJeries and J. Wattie Canneries, (eased, as did Forest rights! (and South British Insurance.! Alliance. Marlin Carpets, Waitaki, Wilson Cement, and S.F.M., all of which have been rising steadily lately, made further good gains. New Zealand Refining lost another sc, to sell at 470 c. B.H.P. finished the day at a steady 1760 c. although other exchanges recorded lower prices. Dunlop Australia, in first trading for some weeks, put on 30e to 236 c. The company has carved out a strong position in the Australian and New Zealand textile industry.
