First Inter-Club Tennis To Start

The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association will open its inter-club season tomorrow with the first mixed A grade on the grass courts at Wilding Park, the first use of grass this season.

Eight teams, the same num-! ber as last season, will participate, the only difference being that Beckenham has been replaced by Edgeware. In the first round. Avonside, I which won last season, will play Edgeware, and the run-ner-up, Cashmere, will me tj Elmwood. The other matches are Barrington v. Fendalton, Shirley v. Spreydon. The senior men's competi-; tion will begin next Saturday! and the senior women’s on November 8. No Labour Day Week-end tournament is being held in! Christchurch, but various Canterbury players wiL play else-! where. The top-ranked Canterbury man, J, M. Mitehell, and the fourth ranked woman, Miss G. Hampton, will play in the annual Otago invitation tournament.

At the same time, 20 Canterbury juniors will play in the junior section of the Otago tournament and 12 .others will play on the West 1 Coast against two local teams on Sunday and Monday. These junior parties are a ! direct result of the two meetings held this year among I representatives of South Island junior associations at w-hich it was decided that jthey would support one another. The visits to Dunedin and the West Coast are an ! innovation.

The 20 players who will play in the Otago tournament are:

Under 18—Boys: P. Mathewson, T. Mooney. Girls: R. Smith. S. Moore. P. James, G. Iredale, P. Bamford. J. Dodgshun. Under 18—Boys: J. Hampton, N. Blackburn. Girls: E. Smith. J. Wigley. Under U —Boys: P. Hampton, D. Chapman, G. Wilson. W. Andrew, P. I Burn. Girls: S. Chapman, L. ' Wilson, A. Mehaiski.

The team to go to the Weet Coast is:—Boys: B. Sanders, T. de Vries. S. Petrie, S. Burns, B. Fearnley. W. Dirreen. Girls: IP Smitheram, J. Dalzell, B. Hampton. J. Fowke, C. Graham, IC. Dalzell.
