New Zealand Otter
Sir, —Replying to Dr Duff’s inquiry, the records concerned were fully set out in a 1964 paper, copies of which were sent to the museum. A further paper, read last
August before the New Zealand Ecological Society, will appear in the next issue of “Proceedings.” The comment of C. J. Harris in his “Otters” (1968) may be quoted: “It must at once be conceded that a number of these accounts do read very convincingly; certainly they go far towards convincing any reader unfamiliar with the fauna of New Zealand that for many years some unexplained animal has been
at large, and an acquatic animal at that” Though he was unwilling at that stage to concede that this animal was an otter, he did not suggest any alternative, and it is hard to imagine one.—Yours, etc., G. A. POLLOCK. October 22, 1969.
