“Mona Vale”
Sir, —I take it that the purpose in acquiring “Mona Vale” was that it should serve the people as a whole, not simply the “prestige” section. Why not make the building, in its present state, without costly alterations, into a major craft centre? Located as “Mona Vale” is, equidistant from Riccarton, Merivale, Bryndwr and Fendalton, it is ideal. Such a centre under a competent director would have wide appeal and the place would become a thriving centre and self-sup-porting. “Risingholme” has pointed the way. There can be no question as to the popularity of crafts of all kinds. The gardens would be open to the public and garden parties held if desired. Simple tea arrangements could be made to provide for the needs of the craft centre as well as outdoor facilities for garden visitors. I mentioned this proposal to several councillors, but it has not been well received; hence this letter.—Yours, etc., J. L. HAY. October 22, 1969.
