History Award
The J. M. Sherrard Award to encourage further study by New Zealand regional historians, was set up at the annual meeting of the Historical Association (Canterbury) this Because the award will ' cover the entire field of New I- Zealand regional history, all . interested institutions, socie- . ties and individuals in the 1 country will be asked for their support. . The initial amount of $lOOO j will be administered by a 1 trust fund. The award will ! be made every two years and > will provide for a $lOO grant i with an accompanying token ' or certificate. I The meeting instructed the • new committee to report to a : general meeting next year on • ways and means of impleI meriting the award. Mr Sherrard, after whom the award was named, was a , prominent member of the as- ' sociation. His book, “Kaikoura, History of the District,” is considered to be an ‘ outstanding local history. He was working on a history of > the Marlborough county at 1 the time of his death. ! Officers elected were: Pre--1 sident, Miss S. Mann; vice- ! president, Professor G. Wood- ! ward; treasurer, Mr P. Keir; secretary, Mr P. Adams: com- ■ mittee, Mesdames A. Cooper ; and M. Erher, Messrs W. J. .Gardner, N. Morris.
