Commodore Did Not Know Of Boats

Michael James Ruffbead, a fisherman, said in evidence at Tuesday’s hearing of the Court of Inquiry into the loss of two fishing boats on the way to the Chatham Islands that he did not know that two unauthorised boats were going to join the convoy off Lyttelton. Mr Ruffhead had been appointed commodore of the tonvoy. In yesterday’s report of

the hearing in “The Press,” Mr Ruffhead was quoted in the introduction to the report as saying that he knew the boats were going to join the convoy at Lyttelton. He was correctly reported in the body of the report as saying that he did not know of the presence of the boats. The error, which was attributable to the misreading of a sub-editorial amendment, is regretted.
