WARDENS GTVENSHIRTS
The Christchurch parking wardens will be back on duty this morning wearing the uniforms provided by the City Council and shirts provided by an anonymous donor. At the invitation of the Mayor (Mr Guthrey), union officers met councillors and their staff yesterday in an informal meeting to try to resolve the dispute. Among those present were the union secretaries representing the girls and the traffic officers (Messrs E C. Blacker and B. Alderdice, respectively), the vice-president of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr L. Short), and several councillors and council representatives, including Crs B. J. Britten and E. B. E. Taylor. No agreement was reached during the meeting, and Mr Guthrey afterwards expressed deep disappointment at this failure.
However, before the union representatives left the council building an anonymous donor offered to provide the, six girls with three shirts each. His only condition was that his identity be kept secret. The offer was later considered by the parking wardens, and according to Mr Blacker' they hesitated to accept what they felt should have been provided by the council. However eventually, they did. and expressed their thanks to their “publicspirited benefactor.” The 18 shirts were picked up from a wholesale distributor later in the day. The photograph shows Misses A. Maunder (middle) and P. A. Stokes trying on the new shirts. The other wardens are, from left, Mesdames B. Bottomley and M. Whall, and Miss M. Miller.
