1455 DIE FROM FLU

(N.Z. Press Association)

PORT MORESBY, Oct 22. The Army, the Air Force and the Administration are combining in a battle against an influenza epidemic which is spreading death among primitive Papuan communities. A total of 1455 people have died from pneumonia after flu attacks in the territory in the last eight weeks. The most concentrated effort to combat the epidemic is being made in the southern highlands, the worst-hit district, where 200,000 people live in isolated mountain communities. The epidemic spread from Australia some months ago, appeared in many coastal areas but caused virtually no deaths.
