High Winds At Mt Cook

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Oct. 22. Winds exceeded 50 miles an hour in the Mount Cook area during the night and near gales were experienced today. Rainfall for 24 hours to 9 a.m. was 2.44 in, Ranger R. Ryan, of the Mount Cook National Park Board reported. Rain continued throughout the day and toll circuits from Timaru were

disrupted. Mr Ryan said that some climbers had arrived in the area. Two were working as gardeners for the Tourist Hotel Corporation, as others were looking for jobs until the weather permitted climbing. “It does not look like being a gopd season in so far as the normal snow and ice routes are concerned,” said Mr Ryan. Green ice was showing on Mount Cook from 11,000 ft up, which was not a good sign. Last year, Mount Cook was covered to February when the summit ice remained soft. At present the ice was hard as shown by the greenisl) or bluish tinge of glacial ice.
