Italians Face New Crisis
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, October 22. Italians are now facing a shortage of medicine, post office chaos, and fears of yet another Government crisis after many weeks of social and labour unrest.
A stoppage by the staffs of pharmaceutical wholesalers has added to difficulties caused by public service strikes which threaten to involve five million workers by Friday.
Letters and parcels continued to pile up today, delaying work in banks and offices, after a strike by postmen yesterday. Chemists are already running out of asprin and other widely-used drugs as a result of the wholesale employees’ strike, which began last Saturday.
Fears of yet another Government crisis, the fourth in 18 months, are rife after a dispute in the ruling Christian Democrat Party. The issue is the party’s attitude towards an eventual re-forming of the Centre-Left coalition which broke up in
July because of a split within the Socialist Party. The disagreement puts the position of the Christian Democrat Party secretary (Mr Flaminio Piccoli), who belongs to a faction on the Right, in the balance.
