FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anticyclone over Northland continues to drift slowly east. A strong north-westerly airstream over the South Island is spreading slowly north-east while a cold front is expected to be near Fiordland this morning and to move over much of the South Island during the day. Forecast:

Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.— North-westerlies, strong and gusty in many inland places and fresh at times about the coast this morning, but decreasing and later turning south-west; line at first, but cool weather spreading north-east with the southwesterlies, bringing a few scattered showers. Outlook: mainly fine.

Marlborough Sounds, Central Marlborough and Nelson,—Strong north-westerlies about Cook Strait and in the north of Nelson, elsewhere fresh ; cloudy, with scattered showers, chiefly about the ranges, at first but more genera] rain later today; mild. Outlook: fair. Buller and Westland.—Fresh northerlies, with periods of rain; turning to the southwest during the day and becoming cooler, with clearing weather. Outlook: scattered showers.
