AROUND THE GREENS
Shirley.—The club, situa-i ted at Richmond Park, will be the headquarters of the coming New Zealand championships from December 29. Club members are more than pleased with the condition of the new weed greens. The idea came from the club green-keeper, L. Vernazoni, who had played in weed greens in Dunedin and persuaded the club executive to follow suit with outstanding results, due mainly to the efforts of greenkeeper, C. Manson.
The important factor about weed greens is that only a little rolling is required after rain before play can commence
As well as the work on the greens two new fences have been erected, one of brick and one of block while the floor of the pavilion has been sanded.
One of the great advantages of the Shirley Bowling Club is the large amount of parking space available in the adjoining Richmond Park. With space for more than 100 cars it is an ideal headquarters for a large tournament like the New Zealand championships. Lyttelton Watersiders. With its greens situated in the Heathcote Domain this club has one of the most
[picturesque settings in Christchurch. The club has recently completed a new pavilion with a locker-room, kitchen and other facilities. Most of the work was done by a small group of members.
The green here has also been changed from grass to weed. This was purchased from the St Albans club, which originally obtained its weed from Ranfurly, North Otago.
AU persons in the district are invited to inspect the club and the facilities which are shared with the Heathcote Ladies Club. Christchurch R.S.A.—This club has also followed the trend to weed greens and the new surface is in good condition. Membership is increasing and the dub is getting back on its feet again. South Brighton.— The greens at this club are in their best condition ever, mainly because of the efforts of the green superintendent, 1 Clegg, and the assistance of W. O’Brien and T. Prebble. Much of their work has been in raising the level of the ditches in compliance with the new rule. All the wooden curbing has been replaced with a concrete base and a hardwood top. The club is also planning a membership drive.
