Victorian Tennis Deal Saves Aust. Circuit
fN.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Australia’s 1970 open tennis circuit was saved from possible abandonment when the Victorian Lawn Tennis Association clinched a §lO,OOO half-sponsorship for its state titles in January.
It also secured $5OOO sponsorship to cover the cost of the United States Davis Cup team to play in the championships.
The association’s manager (Mr A. Aitchison) announcing that the championships would be held from January 10 to January 18, said on Tuesday night that the association was also negotiating for the appearance of leading British and European players and the Russian Davis Cup team.
The titles, with prizemoney of $13,000, were threatened with abandonment unless members of the Ameri-can-based professional group, World Championship Tennis, agreed to play. The group’s Australian representative, Mr J. Parker, said in Sydney that, with prize-money guaranteed, there was now no obstacle in the way of the appearance of the professionals in the Victorian
and combined Australian-New South Wales titles in Sydney. Professionals expected to compete include J. Newcombe and A. Roche (Australia), T. Okker (Netherlands), N. Piiic (Jugoslavia) and C. Drysdale (South Africa).
