129-RUN WIN

Auckland Out For 86 •‘The Preu" Special Service Christchurch Boys’ High School defeated Auckland Grammar by 129 runs in their annual cricket match yesterday. Auckland, in the first innings, boosted its overnight score to 200, chiefly through the efforts of D. Appleby (48) and W. Martin (31), avoiding the follow-on and leaving Christchurch nine runs ahead. The Christchurch batsmen, in their second innings, threw the bat at almost everything in an endeavour to score runs quickly. This they did as K. Squire and G. Smith shared in an 80-run partnership, allowing the team to declare at 125 for four. Auckland was left 175 min, utes to score 216 runs, but immediately met trouble, losing three wickets before tea, two from balls which kept low from 1. Taylor. The collapse continued as R. Hadlee bowled mainly short of a length while the batsmen tried to hook him. Seven wickets fell for onlv 33 runs. Martin and T. Noble resisted well and scored a face-saving partnership of 50 runs, taking the score to 83. The partnership dissolved when Smith took a fantastic return catch off Martin, and Auckland was soon all out for
