CONTEST IN DUNEDIN

Maori Cultural Groups Maori groups from Canterbury, Otago and Southland took part in the South Island Maori cultural competitions which were held in the Otago University Hall before about 500 persons. The competitions were opened by the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr R. J. Calvert), and the trophies were presented by Mrs W. TirikateneSullivan, the member of Parliament for Southern Maori and patron of the South Island Maori Cultural Council. Mrs Tirikatene - Sullivan praised the work Maori clubs were doing, not only for the Maori youth in each district, but in keeping alive Maori customs and traditions. Seniors (Kia Riwai Memorial Trophy). Mataura Maori Club (Southland) 1, Kia Kotahi Maori Club (Christchurch) 2, Arai Te Uru Maori Club (Dunedin) 3. Intermediates (Waretini Memorial Trophy).—Rehua Hostel (Christchurch) 1, Te Kaihanga Hostel (Christchurch) 2. Juniors (Frederick Napier Hutana Memorial Trophy).— Mataura Maori Club (Southland) 1, Arai Te Uru Maori Club (Dunedin) 2. The Mataura Maori Club also won the Kai Tiaki Trophy for aggregate points.
