PENSIONERS’ FLATS AT LYTTELTON

Prospects for pensioners’ flats at Lyttelton were favourable, provided the Lyttelton Borough Council found the money needed to meet the cost above the Government grant and State Advances Loan, the council was told at its monthly meeting last evening. A copy of a Health Department telegram which was read to the council said that an original approval of $lB,OOO for the four flats at present being built in Winchester Street, Lyttelton, had been increased to $22,000. The council has a State Advances loan of $12,600 and a Government grant of $7480

for the flats. As soon as the council could provide the extra finance required above this combined figure, recommendation for the project woud be confirmed, the copy of the telegram said. The cost of the flats would be $21,598, without paths or site improvements, the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) said. “I hope this council can see its way to provide the $2OOO or so that is needed to complete this project,” said Cr E. A. Camfield. “It is not too fnuch to spend on the older citizens of this borough and I wouldn’t like to think that they are being forced to move away from Lyttelton to find suitable accommodation,” he said. The council referred the matter of the flats to the finance committee for further consideration. Ambulance Grant. An application from the St John Ambulance Association for a grant was referred to the finance committee. In its letter asking for the grant, the association said that although the number of patients carried in Lyttelton last year had climbed to 528, the amount of financial support from the public had dropped. Council Payments. The council approved payments of $25,874.23 for August and $21,113.58 for September.
