WAIROA, Oct. 12. The chairman of the Maori Council (Sir Turi Carroll) said at the reunion of East Coast Maori All Blacks in Wairoa last night that when the tour of South Africa was first proposed he rejected the idea of Maori players going when it was stated that South . Africa did not wish to have them in the New Zealand side.
“But later when it was said that there would be no objection and that Maoris would chosen on the same terms as pakehas, I
had to be consistent,” said Sir Turi Carroll.
“If a European invited a Maori to his home as his equal, would the Maori refuse,” he said. “South Africa has opened the door and said Maoris may be included.
“I say, therefore, let all of us support this tour and see if South Africa is sincere about it. “One cannot alter apartheid in two or three years. It has taken the Maori 100 years to get where we are in our own country,” said Sir Turi Carroll. “As far as South Africa is concerned it may take another 200 years.”
