NAUSORI WINS AT RANDWICK

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY. The New Zealand horse, Nausori, ran a good trial for the Caulfield Cup when he came home strongly to win over the cup distance at Randwick on Saturday. Having his first start in Australia at a mile and a half, Nausori (8/1) ran from second last in the early stages of the weight-for-age Colin Stephen Stakes to beat the New Zealand three-year-old, Mighty Concorde (2/1), which tried to lead all the way, by a neck. The even-money favourite, Roman Consul (Agricola—Jinks) was three-quarters of a length away third. The New Zealand stayer, Styleman, was not suited by the weight-for-age conditions. He ran near the rear all the way and finished fifth, with only one behind him.

Nausori. which was expertly ridden by D. Lake, was given the run of the race and finished strongly. The gelding carried 9-5 on Saturday but will drop to 8-9 in the cup. The trainer, A. Ward, said he would confer with Nausori's owners on a Caulfield Cup run. "It the owners decide on a start Nausori will be flown to Melbourne on Wednesday, but if they decide against the Caulflelo Cup Nausori will have his next start in the W. S. Cox Plate (1OT.) at Moonee Valley on Saturday week.” The New Zealand trainer, C. .Tillings, said he was quite happy with Mighty Concorde’s effort.

"We planned for Mighty Concorde with his light weight of 7-7 to take on Roman Consul with his 9-5," Jlllings said. "We wanted to make Roman Consul carry his big weight all the way. But what we did was to make the race for the other horse, Nausori.”

Mighty Concorde which earned

>lOOO for his second, wilt have Ms next start In the Cox Plate as a lead-up to the V.R.C. Derby. Roman Consul - was the unlucky runner on Saturday. Moore had his whip accidentally knocked out ot his hand with half a fiirlong to go, and this made all the difference. Moore had a great riding day with four winners, but was suspended up to November 1 for causing interference in the first race. He said he would probably appeal. The New Zealand three-year-old, Agreement, failed to carry his big weight of 9-2 In the A.J.C. Clibborn Stakes (Um) and finished second last of the nine starters. Moore did not punish Agreement when he was beaten in the straight.
