SOFTBALL TOUR BY S. AFRICANS
South Africa will be invited to send a men’s softball team to this country in 1971.
The New Zealand Softball Association Council received a letter from South Africa at its meeting on Saturday asking the national team to tour the Republic in 1971. But the association president, Mr D. T. Howe, said New Zealand’s overseas commitments for the next few years did not allow an external tour, and the meeting decided to invite South Africa here instead. The itinerary for the tour by the Arizona men’s team early-next year was approved. The Americans will- play 22 matches, five against full New Zealand teams, and one against a national junior side.
The juniors will be chosen from the under 21s and nominations will be called from associations before the interprovincial tournament at Invercargill during the Christ-mas-New Year period. Mr H. H. Atkin, of Wellington, was appointed selectorcoach of the New Zealand women’s team to attend the world championship in Osaka, Japan, next year. Mr N. Laws, also of Wellington, was appointed assistant selector. The meeting decided to
call for nominations for the remaining six officials for Osaka. It was decided that 15 players will attend the championships.
